      Sustainable Fashion: Upcycling with Julia Csekö

      $10 members, $20 nonmembers

      Join Salem’s Public Artist in Residence Julia Csekö and explore sustainable fashion hands-on by upcycling a piece of clothing. No prior sewing experience is necessary! All are welcome.

      Materials will be provided, but participants can choose to bring an old t-shirt or other item of clothing to transform.

      Create Nights are led by a PEM educator or local guest artist.


      About our collaborator

      Julia Cseko

      Born in Colorado to Brazilian parents on self-exile during the Brazilian military dictatorship, Julia Csekö grew up in Rio. Csekö has received the ALAANA Creative County Grant; the SMFA Travelling Fellowship; the Collective Futures Grant; a Be The Change Award; local cultural council grants from the towns of Somerville, Randolph, and Newton; a Sculpture Space Residency; and the Create the Vote MassCreative Fellowship. She is a current Artist in Residence at the Boston Center for the Arts and the City of Salem’s Public Artist in Residence. Her work includes public commissions, privately collected pieces and pieces held in collections such as the Tufts Permanent Collection, Emerson College, MAM Rio, Morris and Belkin Gallery and CC São Paulo. In 2025, Csekö will return to MassMoCA as an A4A Alumni AiR. She received an MFA from the School of the Museum of the Fine Arts at Tufts in 2013.
