Bring the whole family to listen to a storyteller share tales about nature, form and creativity using the Japanese art of kamishibai.
Kamishibai began in Japan during the Great Depression, but traces its origins to much older forms of pictorial storytelling. These stories were originally told outside in nature using a mobile story box. Children would be called to the storyteller with loud, clacking blocks and given the chance to buy candy or a treat as they sat down for the familiar tales as a group. Roving storytellers shared tales of adventure, drama and clever characters by changing out illustrated paper boards.
The themes of creativity and playfulness (and making surprising things with paper) are central to Noguchi's work. Be sure to check out Isamu Noguchi: “I am not a designer” after the session!
