The Panorama Queer and Trans International Film Festival returns to the Peabody Essex Museum this January! Panorama showcases the work of emerging queer and trans filmmakers under 30 from across six continents. This community-led project reflects back the experiences of the queer community and shares the future-defining narratives of these remarkable young people. Panorama amplifies the work of young artists who continue to create boldly in the face of discrimination, bigotry and other attempts to silence them. Join us in the celebration of our community with an emphasis on joy and resilience. Queer Videography’s 7th festival welcomes members of the trans and queer community, allies and fans of new cinema from around the world!

This year, Panorama’s theme is Resilient Creations, which the organizers describe as “a celebration of the art, spirit and defiance that define queer storytelling. In a year marked by political travesties and ignorant administrations, our festival stands proudly in its punk roots: unbothered and unbreakable.

“To be trans and queer is to be creative and to invent joy in the face of oppression, to find beauty in survival and to turn rebellion into art. Resilient Creations is a testament to the filmmakers, performers and storytellers who continue to create, connect and celebrate even when the world feels heavy. Each project screened this weekend carries its own rhythm of resilience, amplifying stories that refuse to be silenced and voices that refuse to fade. Art, in all its global forms, is one of the most radical acts of resilience there is. So this weekend, we invite you to lean into the noise and the power of creation. Together, we celebrate not just survival, but the unstoppable force of queer joy.”

Kick off the festival with us on Friday night with a special queer community gathering. Evening programming includes an opening reception with photo ops, drag performances, live music by the Velvet Dirtmunchers and select film screenings with special guests. Reserve your spot for free now!

Throughout Saturday and Sunday, enjoy film screenings and additional program offerings, including a creative response station and a horror shorts block curated and hosted live by Salem’s own Wretched Lydia. Join us for a panel discussion on queer filmmaking, featuring mixed media artist and filmmaker Aaron Hwang; Panorama’s Creative Director Mac Allen; Queer Videography’s Jasper Lior and Ilan Kapra; and other festival filmmakers. Visit our community partner tables from NAGLY and the North Shore LGBTQ+ Network in the Main Atrium to learn more about local LGBTQ+ community organizations and resources serving the North Shore.

We hope to see you there!

      Aaron Hwang
      Aaron Hwang

Aaron Hwang (they/them) “happens to make things and makes things happen.” They are a mixed media artist in practice, mechanical engineer by trade and creative force behind 4th District, a filmmaking collective that tells the stories of changers and makers. Hwang’s story is one of contrasts: Their Taiwanese American heritage made them the “Asian kid” in an all-white Wisconsin small town. After moving to bustling Shanghai for high school and discovering a love for engineering and filmmaking, they worked as a product designer designing cameras for robots, but spending nights and weekends making documentaries. Now a filmmaker, they work primarily in post-production and motion graphics, with a style built on intimate stories and kinetic movement.

      Jasper Lior

Jasper Lior (they/them) has been traveling the world and making films for the last eight years, and hosts the Gender Euphoria Podcast. Their passion for storytelling is only matched by their love for noodles, puns and fluffy kittens. Lior has a direct and playful approach to filmmaking. Their signature sense of humor and fearless creative style combine to create outstanding and heartfelt work. They use humor and storytelling to process, learn and educate on various intersectional topics. Their most recent work, Teranga, celebrates black joy and African wisdom through food, ritual and culture. Their past works include Video Game Addiction: An Exposé, Rain on Me (unofficial music video) and Lip Sync for the Presidency. Their YouTube channel has almost 300k views. They have a B.A. in Media Arts from the University of Montana (Missoula), and Massey University.

      Ilan Kapra

Ilan Kapra (he/they/she) is a self-taught videographer, writer, performer, visual artist and costume designer who has been employed in the entertainment industry for the last 12 years in Boston, Minneapolis/St.Paul, Mayaguez, Puerto Rico and Wellington, Aotearoa (New Zealand). Through all these experiences they have honed a strong sense of theme, composition and timing. One of Kapra’s many strengths is their ability to apply their intuition for storytelling and scrupulous attention to detail across many mediums. Their cinematography style is close and intimate. Kapra is always delighted by the unexpected and looking for that little detail that will tell the biggest story. They grew up in a small town in the Midwest and were homeschooled in an isolated fundamentalist Christian community. The transition from their past into their queer/feminist identity has been one of courage and healing. These collected experiences have left Kapra with a lot of gratitude, and a fierce appetite for joy.
