All public areas of the museum are accessible to wheelchairs; the historic houses are not. Yin Yu Tang: A Chinese House offers limited wheelchair accessibility. A representative at the information desk will be happy to discuss accessible routes and amenities. Please contact our Guest Services Department for additional information at 978-542-1644.
Wheelchair-accessible bathrooms are located throughout the museum. Private family bathrooms are available on the first floor.
You are welcome to borrow wheelchairs (standard and wide), strollers and rollators from the coatroom (available on a first-come, first-served basis).
Service animals are welcome in the museum.
Accessible parking is available in the paid garage on New Liberty Street, across from the National Park Service Visitor Center.
The New Liberty Street and Charter Street entrances are available for wheelchair drop-offs. All street-level doors can be operated with a push button.
Public Programs and Interpretation
A Braille informational brochure and audio stop sheet for Yin Yu Tang, A Chinese House, and a Braille brochure about the museum's history are available at the information desk.
Wheelchair seating and assistive listening devices are available for public programs in The Edward Sylvester Auditorium. Requests for an ASL interpreter should be made at least two weeks before your visit. Large-print transcripts of guides to select exhibitions and Yin Yu Tang, A Chinese House are available at the information desk.

The Peabody Essex Museum may photograph or videotape visitors for educational and promotional purposes. Attendance on Museum property is implied consent for the use of visitors’ likenesses for marketing purposes.
Visitor photography without flash, for personal use only, is permitted, except where noted. Flash photography, video and the use of tripods and selfie sticks are permitted only with prior approval from the Security Department.
For security reasons
All parcels, including handbags, brought into the museum are subject to search.
Parcels 18 x 13.5 x 10 inches or larger may not be brought into the galleries without a security inspection and pass.
Neither backpacks nor backpack baby carriers may be worn on your back in the galleries. If permitted to carry your bag, you will be asked to wear it on the front of your body.
Out of consideration for others, set cell phones to silent at all times. Please refrain from talking on cell phones and using excessive flash in the galleries.
Painted faces, costume masks, large-fitting costumes, protruding objects (costume accessories) and large brimmed hats are not permitted on adults or children.
Umbrellas are not permitted in the galleries and must be left in the self-check coat area.

Services available for your comfort
A self-check coat rack with limited space is available. Note: All bags brought into the museum are subject to inspection by PEM’s security team.
Storage lockers: Not available at this time.
Elevator access: Elevators are located just off the Main Atrium, in the Yin Yu Tang annex, and in the Special Exhibitions Gallery.
Wheelchair accessibility: Museum galleries are wheelchair accessible. Wheelchairs are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please ask for assistance at the coat check.
Baby-changing stations are located in all restrooms on the first floor of the museum.
Strollers are allowed in the galleries but not in Yin Yu Tang. They may be checked at the coat room.
