PEM to sell building at 24 Charter Street

      Released December 16, 2021

SALEM, MA — The Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) will list its property at 24 Charter Street for sale on December 16, 2021. The property, known as the Gilbert Chadwick House, will be sold with an historical easement to ensure that the unique historic character of its exterior is preserved. Proceeds of the sale will support the improvement and continued activation of PEM’s historic campus.

“The Gilbert-Chadwick House is a component of PEM’s campus that, unfortunately, is not ideal for museum historic house interpretation. It does, however, hold great potential to become a handsome, functional single family or duplex home in downtown Salem,” said Bob Monk, PEM’s Interim Chief Operating Officer. “It is our hope that the sale of this structure can help address Salem’s housing shortage and add vibrancy to the Charter Street neighborhood.”

The Gilbert Chadwick house, built about 1820, is a three-story brick townhouse in the late Federal style with some late 19th-century updates. The property, which is approximately 3,300 square feet and currently arranged as three apartment units, will be offered for sale by Dan Fox of Merry Fox Realty with a listing price of $600,000.

PEM's campus offers a varied and unique visitor experience with hands-on creativity zones, interactive opportunities and performance spaces. Twenty-two noted historic structures grace PEM’s campus, including Yin Yu Tang, a 200-year-old Chinese house that is the only such example of Chinese domestic architecture on display in the United States.
