Taking inspiration from the women’s suffrage movement, the fight for women’s rights past and present and our exhibition Made It: The Women Who Revolutionized Fashion, design your own mask, banner or suffragist sash to make a statement. Use clothes or materials you have at home to make your piece sustainable. Channeling the bold designers featured in the exhibition, what powerful message do you want to share with the world? Supplies
- Fabric face mask, recycled T-shirts, pillowcases, fabric scraps, etc.
- Pencil
- Paper
- Fabric markers or permanent markers
- Cardboard or Cardstock
- Needle and thread (optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Plan your design on paper. Then lightly sketch the design onto your fabric with a pencil. If you choose a design with text, test out the spacing of the letters before you start to color.
Step 2: Prep your fabric for coloring if necessary. Place cardboard between any layers of fabric to prevent bleeding. For example, put cardboard inside a shirt. Place heavy objects on the edges of your fabric to keep it tight and in place.
Step 3: Draw or write your design on the fabric using either permanent or fabric markers. Tip: Add embroidery to your design using a needle and thread after you finished the marker design. This way the threads will not be in the way while coloring!
Step 4: Wear your fresh new designs when you go out and share your ideas with the world.
