February 27 is National Polar Bear Day! To celebrate, we will learn about these special animals. Did you know the Arctic is named after polar bears? Arctos is the Greek word for bear and Arctic means “place with bears.” Sadly, most polar bear populations are in serious decline, struggling to find food on land. Polar bears primarily hunt seals out on the sea ice and melting ice makes it difficult for them to find enough food. The good news is we can help by being more conscious of our personal and collective environmental impacts. Create a polar bear puppet of your own to join you in chilly adventures!
Supplies
- Card stock paper (like index cards or a folder)
- Scissors
- Brads (paper fasteners)
- Pencil
- Marker
Instructions
Step 1: Draw the head, body and four legs of a polar bear separately on your paper.
Step 2: Carefully cut out each piece of your bear.
Step 3: Push through the paper with brads to connect the head and legs of the bear to its body.
Step 4: Draw the bear’s face and any other details onto your finished puppet with the marker.
