Join us in Rowley for the next meeting of PEM’s book club to discuss Open City by Teju Cole. This book was selected by Stephanie Tung, the Byrne Family Curator of Photography.

Along the streets of Manhattan, a young Nigerian doctor doing his residency wanders aimlessly. The walks meet a need for Julius: they are a release from work, and they give him the opportunity to process his relationships, his recent breakup with his girlfriend, his present and his past. But it is not only a physical landscape he covers – Julius also crisscrosses social territory. The people he encounters from different cultures and classes provide insight on a journey that takes him to Brussels, to the Nigeria of his youth and into the most unrecognizable facets of his own soul.

PEMreads offers a place to share ideas about the books we read and how they, as another form of artistic expression, shape our views and invite us to explore other worlds. We hope you’ll join us!

Parking at the collection center is free and plentiful. PEM personnel will be on hand to direct you to the PEMreads meeting.
