Engage in pop-up conversations with climate advocates, researchers and community leaders inside the exhibition in the “Be the Change” zone on select Saturdays. Ask questions and hear about local and regional efforts to address climate change.

Stephen Young is a former chair of the Geography and Sustainability Department at Salem State University, where he uses remote sensing (satellite imaging) to analyze climate change and forest conservation. His numerous publications include “Overall Warming with Reduced Seasonality: Temperature Change in New England, USA, 1900–2020,” one of the most read articles in the journal Climate. In addition to his academic research, he bridges the arts and sciences through art gallery exhibitions that highlight environmental issues. Young has mounted more than 25 gallery showings throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, Tunisia and Iran.

Sustainable Marblehead is a community organization based in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Through education and working groups on topics such as urban forestry and green building, Sustainable Marblehead aims to reduce waste and pollution and achieve net zero carbon emissions by the year 2040.

Salem Sound Coastwatch is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and preserving the environment of Salem Sound and its watershed. Through community engagement and education, Salem Sound Coastwatch aims to empower community members to take action guided by environmental monitoring, scientific studies and municipal guidance.

The City of Salem’s Sustainability and Resiliency Department is responsible for overseeing environmental sustainability initiatives across the Salem municipal government and larger community. By engaging directly with Salem residents, businesses and nonprofits, the department aims to promote the goals of its Resilient Together initiative and surpass the Massachusetts state goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

Emerald Cities Collaborative (ECC) is a national nonprofit network of organizations working together to advance sustainability while creating just and inclusive economies with opportunities for all. ECC prioritizes creating economic infrastructure that provides family-supporting wages and career pathways for local community members, alongside contracting opportunities for women, BIPOC and other disadvantaged business owners and workers.

The Mass Audubon Youth Climate Leadership Program (YCLP) is a dynamic initiative driven by young people passionate about climate action. Through partnerships with schools, nonprofits and research institutions, the program fosters learning, dialogue and networking opportunities for youth to develop innovative climate solutions. Over the course of a year, participants engage in immersive experiences, culminating in the creation and implementation of projects within local communities. Mentors support youth in every step of the process, from brainstorming ideas to evaluating project outcomes, empowering them to become effective agents of change in the fight against climate change. PEM and Mass Audubon have partnered to start the North Shore chapter. Now accepting enrollment for fall 2024!
