#PEMfromhome \\ Drop-In Art Activities
May 8 is World Collage Day. Many artists have defined their career through storytelling in collaged artwork, such as Eric Carle (The Very Hungry Caterpillar), Leo Lionni (Frederick) and Jayme McGowan (One Bear Extraordinaire). Thinking about our special exhibition, Where the Questions Live, and artist Wes Sam-Bruce’s prompt: “How is writing a poem like walking through a landscape on a trail?,” ask yourself what kind of companion you would like to walk the trail with you. Let’s take an imaginative hike with our own collaged characters this spring!
- Construction or any colored/patterned paper
- Glue stick
- Pencil or a popsicle stick
- Colored pencils, crayons or markers
Step 1: Think about what kind of special character you want to create. Draw the head, body, arms and legs, separately, on your colored paper(s).
Step 2: Carefully cut out each part of your character.
Step 3: Decorate your pieces by drawing any facial expressions or details with your coloring materials.
Step 4: Glue together the pieces of your character.
Step 5: Take your pencil/popsicle stick and tape it to the back of your collage character so you can take them with you as a companion wherever you go!
