Mozart's String Quartet No. 22 in B-flat, K589, is one of three quartets Mozart dedicated to Frederick William II, King of Prussia. The king was an accomplished cellist, and Mozart therefore created a prominent and frequently melodic role for his royal client. Bartók's String Quartet No. 4 is considered to be one of this composer's greatest works. Colored by Hungarian folk style, this music is simultaneously highly passionate and cerebral.

 Monday, January 16, 2012 from 12:30pm - 6pm

 Location: Morse Auditorium

In conjunction with Shapeshifting and in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. and the upcoming Black History Month, PEM features three outstanding films dealing with human rights issues.

12:30–1:30 pm | American Outrage

2008, 56 minutes, directed by George Gage and Beth Gage.

The United States government has spent millions prosecuting two elderly Western Shoshone women for grazing their livestock on the open range outside their private ranch, insisting that the sisters are degrading the land. The Dann sisters say the real reason is that Western Shoshone land is the second largest gold producing area in the world.

Tickets Available at the Door. First come, first served.

2–3:45 pm | Sing Your Song

2011, 104 minutes, directed by Susanne Rostock.

Introduction and Q&A with filmmaker Susanne Rostock

Susanne Rostock's documentary surveys the inspiring life of singer, actor and activist Harry Belafonte. Rostock reveals Belafonte to be a tenacious activist who worked intimately with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., mobilized celebrities for social justice, participated in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa and took action to counter gang violence, prisons and youth incarceration. Belafonte's beliefs elicited unwarranted invasions by the FBI into both his personal life and his career, leading to years of struggle with the powers that be.

Tickets Available at the Door. First come, first served.

4:30–6 pm | A Good Day to Die

2011, 90 minutes, directed by David Mueller and Lynn Salt (Choctaw).

Dennis Banks (Anishinaabe) co-founded the American Indian Movement in 1968 to call attention to the plight of urban Native Americans in Minneapolis. The film presents an intimate look at the Banks' life: his early experience in boarding schools, military service in Japan, his transformative experience in Stillwater State Prison and subsequent founding of a movement that, through confrontational actions in Washington, D.C., Custer, S.D., and Wounded Knee, S.D., forever changed the lives of Native Americans.

Tickets Available at the Door. First come, first served.

Made possible by the Lowell Institute

 Friday, December 2, 2011 at 7:45pm

 Location: Morse Auditorium

Lynn Barber's passion for birding took her to 25 states and three Canadian provinces in 2008, during her official Big Year of birding in North America. At 723 species, she set a 21st-century record, second only to one other person! Barber reveals the not-so-fine art of bird chasing and shares her more recent artful forays into painting birds.

A book signing follows.

Co-sponsored by the Essex County Ornithological Club. The E.C.O.C business meeting is held from 7:30–7:45 pm.

Betty Boop and Cab Calloway and his band in a scat-filled crazy and timeless example of unhinged and creative artistic expression.

Little Dutch Mill
1934, 8.5 minutes

Dancing on the Moon
1935, 8 minutes

Hunky (a mother donkey leading a human-free life in the American Southwest) protects her young offspring, Spunky from enslavement by a prospector looking for a pack animal.

Chicken a la King
1936, 7 minutes

A Mae West-like duck draws the sultan of the chickens into a love triangle.

Somewhere in Dreamland
1936, 9 minutes

In their dreams, two poor and hungry tots enter a fantasy kingdom where there are more sweets than they can eat.

Chess Nuts
1932, 6 minutes

Betty Boop is the black queen and Bimbo is the white king in this initially realistic chess game that becomes a chaotic, animated quest.

8–9 pm

Devil Music Ensemble returns to perform original musical accompaniments to five silent films from the 1920s. Previous engagements at PEM featured The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Nosferatu.

Les Mystères du Château de Dé (Mysteries of the Chateau of Dice)
1929, 20 minutes, directed by Man Ray

Man Ray uses a spacious chateau and a rundown castle to explore spatial relationships and textures. Look for people wearing stockings over their heads, throwing huge dice and practicing weird diving and swimming formations in an indoor pool.

Vormittagsspuk (Ghosts Before Breakfast)
1928, 6 minutes, directed by Hans Richter

The German Dadaist filmmaker uses stop-motion animation to create an odd dream world featuring flying bowler hats.

Anémic Cinéma (Anemic Cinema)
1926, 7 minutes, directed by Marcel Duchamp

Duchamp's experimental film depicts whirling animated drawings — which he called Rotoreliefs — alternating with puns in French.

Ballet Mécanique (Mechanical Ballet)
1924, 11 minutes, produced and directed by Fernand Léger, photographed by Dudley Murphy (and, possibly, Man Ray)

This brief, non-narrative exploration of cubist form, black-and-white tonalities, and various vectors is conveyed through constant, rapidly cut movements and compositions.

Symphonie Diagonale (Diagonal Symphony)
1924, 7.5 minutes, directed by Viking Eggeling

A tilted figure grows with the addition of short straight lines and curves that sprout from the existing design. The figure vanishes and the process begins again with a new pattern, each cycle lasting one or two seconds.

All for the Love of Thee

 Saturday, September 24, 2011 from 2pm - 3:30pm

 Location: Peabody Essex Museum

In partnership with the Salem Literature Festival, PEM offers a presentation on the traditional ballad — the root of literature, poetry and songwriting. The greatest collection of folk ballads in the English language was compiled in Massachusetts. Francis James Child, a brilliant 19th-century Harvard professor, devoted his life to the epic collection, so respected that its 305 ballads are still known as the Child Ballads. Its publication helped launch the modern folk movement.

Musician and author Scott Alarik, 'Best of Boston' songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jake Armerding and singer Jennifer Evans explore the timeless resonance of the traditional ballad. Focusing on songs collected by 19th-century folklorist Francis Child, the musicians talk with Trevor Smith, Contemporary Art Curator, on this undying tradition and how it inspired artist Susan Philipsz' installation If I With You Would Go.

Made possible by the Lowell Institute. A book-signing follows.

Tickets available at the door. Concert included with museum admission.
