Chief Financial Officer We are seeking an experienced senior financial executive to manage the financial infrastructure of one of the leading fine arts institutions in the United States. Reporting to the Deputy Director & Chief Operating Officer, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for the overall effective financial and investment management of the Peabody Essex Museum. The CFO will be the lead in collaborating with the Board’s Finance & Audit Committee, and will strongly support the Board’s Investment Committee. Working with Board leaders as well as with senior members of the Peabody Essex Museum staff, the CFO’s primary responsibility will be to ensure that the institution continues to build on its financial strength. This strength enables PEM to aggressively pursue its arts, education and community service mission. The CFO will: manage all of the organization’s financial planning, annual budgeting and forecasting; develop long range financial strategies and plans; manage tax liabilities; manage the financial assets and liabilities of the Peabody Essex Museum; meet reporting and compliance requirements of various parties; oversee contracts and vendor relationships; coordinate various ongoing financial negotiations; with the IT Manager oversees the information technology infrastructure of the institution. The CFO will collaborate with all Peabody Essex Museum departments to ensure that programs, projects and exhibitions are properly budgeted and remain on budget, and that funds are administered appropriately from a financial and compliance perspective. The CFO oversees a Finance Department of six that includes a controller, financial analyst, staff accountants, as well as an information technology department of three professionals. This position requires a hands-on financial professional who will personally grapple with and resolve issues, and who encourages others in the department to be equally engaged and supportive. For more information please contact: Master Carpenter We are seeking a hands-on Master Carpenter who collaborates closely with Exhibit Planning, Registration and the Collection Services department to construct and install museum exhibit structures and fixtures made of various materials. Reporting to the Director of Facilities and Security, the Master Carpenter develops work plans and schedules for assistants, maintenance helpers, interns or outside contractors as needed to successfully meet museum program objectives. The Master Carpenter provides assistance to move, install, crate, uncrate works of art in support of the museum’s exhibition program as well as to repair and maintain exhibit furniture, fixtures cases, vitrines and mounts currently on exhibit. The Master Carpenter also completes historically appropriate repair, maintenance, restoration and preservation projects at the museum’s historic properties as well as general maintenance carpentry projects for the museum’s facilities and galleries. Five to ten years of experience as a Lead/Master Carpenter with project management responsibility and a Massachusetts Construction Supervisor's License and/or a Construction Contractor's License are required. Proficiency as a finish carpenter, excellent communication, collaborative, and analytical skills are also required. Experience in museum exhibit fabrication, or a related area such as architectural modeling or industrial exhibit fabrication is highly desirable. Exhibition Project Coordinator We are seeking a highly talented Exhibition Project Coordinator, a newly created position in the Exhibition Planning Department to support long range and short term exhibition planning and the implementation of an array of projects and tasks related to the Museum's exhibition program. Under the supervision of the Director of Exhibition Planning, the successful candidate works closely with Design, Curatorial, Interpretation, Registration, Collections Services and Facilities Management to coordinate planning, scheduling and production activities related to the Museum's changing exhibitions, traveling exhibitions, collection gallery rotations and special projects. The Exhibition Project Coordinator must have a minimum of three years experience in planning, prioritizing, scheduling, and project implementation; and experience coordinating a variety of different projects at one time. Exhibition planning experience within a museum is preferred. Strong project management skills are required as well as the ability to establish effective working relationships across several departments. Solid computer skills using Microsoft Office and the ability to work with digital images are required. A BA in Art History, Museum Studies or related program or the equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Assistant Director of Education for Adult Programs We are seeking an experienced and highly creative Assistant Director of Education for Adult Programs, a new management position in the Education Department to oversee and guide the work of programs and docent staff. Under the direction of the Director of Education and Interpretation, the successful candidate will provide strategic leadership and develop new initiatives to maximize audience potential, provide multiple access points, and create engaging experiences of art and culture for adult, general, and patron audiences. The Assistant Director establishes partnerships both internally and externally to position the museum as a unique and significant program provider locally and nationally. The Assistant Director also advances the success of existing programs, such as lectures and panels, artist presentations, performances, and the museum's signature Atrium Alive weekend events, as well as ensures high quality training and strong pedagogical skills among the docent corps. The Assistant Director must have at least seven years' experience in museum education and a proven track record of developing and implementing successful and multi-faceted programs for a variety of adult audiences. Strong collaborative skills, staff and budget management, demonstrated experience forging effective partnerships between cultural organizations, and an interdisciplinary approach are essential. Working knowledge of world cultures and visual and performing arts is required. The successful candidate must have supervisory experience and the ability to effectively mentor direct reports for success. In addition, the candidate will have excellent written and oral communications skills, and the ability to engage communities and attract outside funders. A Master's degree or the equivalent combination of experience and education in a related field is required. Museum Action Corps Internship Program The Museum Action Corps is a unique internship program that provides opportunities for a culturally diverse group of students from Massachusetts, ages 16 to 21, to learn about museums firsthand and to gain valuable professional work experience. The Museum Action Corps combines paid, museum-based employment with leadership and creativity development to broaden students' perspectives on work and their role as members of various communities. The MAC program is funded by The Education through Cultural and Historical Organizations (ECHO) Act, which is an enrichment initiative serving children, teachers and adult learners. ECHO programs are produced jointly and individually through a collaboration of six regional organizations: Alaska Native Heritage Center; North Slope Borough ECHO Project; Bishop Museum; New Bedford ECHO Project; Peabody Essex Museum; and the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. Working with schools and community-based organizations, ECHO programs amplify educational benefits, foster appreciation of culture and history, and assist communities in maximizing the social benefits of new technologies. High School Internships consist of 200 hours of paid work. Eligibility for this position is limited to individuals ages 16 to 18 who currently live and attend high school in Massachusetts. College Internships consist of 400 hours of paid work. Eligibility for this position is limited to individuals ages 17 to 21 who currently either live or attend college or university in Massachusetts. There are no exceptions to this rule. Residents of Massachusetts attending college or university outside the state are also eligible. Students also must be interested in pursuing a professional career in the field the internship concentrates on. These internships are also available for college credit if officially requested by the student. Eligibility: Internships are for a period of approximately of three months. Each applicant will work with museum officials to determine the schedule for internship completion. Students must commit to complete the total number of internship hours including hours allocated for the weekly internship meetings (Weds at 3pm) and MAC events. In order to be considered for these internships, students must submit a completed MAC application together with all required materials on or before the posted deadline. Non U.S. citizens must offer proper visas and proof of alien status, which allows them to work in the United States as well as a letter from their school or academic institution giving them the clearance to apply to the program. Minorities and low income students are encouraged to apply. Students from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply, with priority given to underrepresented and low income applicants and students from underserved or diverse backgrounds. A lottery for applicants that don't fall under these categories is then conducted. Internship Positions are available in various areas throughout the Peabody Essex Museum. Internship activities will vary based on the department for which an intern works. Every effort will be made to place students in their preferred department.
