Director of Annual Giving

We are seeking a full time Director of Annual Giving who will be a pro-active leader within the Museum's fundraising team. Reporting to the Director of Individual Giving, the position is responsible for developing and managing the Museum's annual fund programs, including the East India Marine Associates (EIMA), Friends of the Museum, and the direct mail initiatives which are the major vehicles for generating unrestricted annual support. The Director is an active "front-line" fundraiser, interacting regularly with various Museum constituencies and identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding individual prospects and donors for annual philanthropic support. The position is responsible for planning and executing strategies for gaining new EIMA members and maintaining giving society renewal donors, as well as developing networks and cultivation activities for EIMA and Friends of the Museum members. Significant financial and donor expansion of these programs is planned over the coming years.

The qualified individual will possess: BA/BS; advanced degree preferred; 5 - 7 years of relevant development experience; excellent interpersonal, political, writing, communication, and computer skills including familiarity with Raiser’s Edge. Experience with direct mail fundraising programs highly desirable. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate the ability to work with wide array of personalities and work styles; multi-task; exhibit team-orientation, creativity, initiative; an assertive results-driven personality; and highly developed listening skills.

Assistant Director for Adult Programs

The Peabody Essex Museum, one of the most dynamic art museums in the nation, is seeking a highly talented Assistant Director for Adult Programs, a newly created position in the Education Department to oversee and guide the work of public programs and docent staff. Under the direction of the Director of Education and Interpretation, the successful candidate will provide strategic leadership and develop new initiatives to maximize audience potential, provide multiple access points, and create engaging experiences of art and culture for adult and general audiences. The Assistant Director establishes partnerships both internally and externally to position the museum as a unique and significant program provider locally and nationally. The Assistant Director also advances the success of existing programs, such as lectures and panels, artist presentations, performances, and the museum's signature Atrium Alive weekend events, as well as ensures high quality training and strong pedagogical skills among the docent corps.

The Assistant Director must have at least five years experience in museum education and a proven track record of developing and implementing successful and multi-faceted programs for a variety of adult audiences. Strong collaborative skills, budget management, demonstrated experience forging effective partnerships between cultural organizations, and an interdisciplinary approach are essential. Working knowledge of world cultures and visual and performing arts is also essential. The successful candidate must have supervisory experience and the ability to effectively mentor direct reports for success. In addition, the candidate will have excellent written and oral communications skills, and the ability to engage communities and attract outside funders.

A Master's degree or the equivalent combination of experience and education in a related field is required.

Multiple Visit Partnership Program Coordinator

We are seeking a coordinator for our multiple visit school program for a one-year grant supported position. The Multiple Visit Partnership Program (MVPP) works extensively with under-resourced schools in its home community of Salem and neighboring school districts to serve approximately 1400 students and teachers. The coordinator will work closely with school educators to design sequential museum experiences that encourage a deeper understanding of content related to the state’s curriculum frameworks while supporting critical thinking and student creativity. Responsibilities include: developing object-based lesson plans and goals tailored to each MVPP school educator and his/her class; fostering close collaborative relationships with district teachers, principals, and administrators; training and monitoring docents to successfully implement lesson plans; coordinating all logistical aspects of MVPP; maintaining budget; engaging staff across museum departments to present to MVPP students and teachers; developing professional development workshops for district teachers.

Qualifications:

BA in art history, studio arts, or art education (MA preferred); 3-5 years relevant museum education or classroom experience; knowledge of state and national curriculum frameworks and current pedagogical methods for informal learning environments; knowledge of global arts and culture; excellent interpersonal communications and writing skills; excellent teaching skills in museum or classroom environment; ability to maintain and track budgets; demonstrated record of creativity and initiative.

Public Relations Associate

We are seeking a dynamic Public Relations Associate to join our Public Relations team. Under the direction of the Public Relations Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for performing duties essential to an active and effective public relations program such as:

  • Developing and implementing PR campaigns in support of Museum exhibitions, programs, resources, acquisitions, and special events to the general and specialized press;
  • Assisting with department planning and budgeting as assigned;
  • Assume primary responsibility for the following: generating publicity on behalf of the Museum’s programs, as assigned; coordination of press previews; management of visual materials needed by the PR department; development of press lists;
  • Assist with coordination of projects for interns and volunteers; and other projects as assigned.

BA/BS with some course work in art history and/or fine arts or equivalent experience required. Minimum of 3 years of related PR experience or equivalent combination of training and experience required. Experience working within a museum or other non-profit arts organization preferred. Required: excellent written and oral communication skills; word processing skills with database knowledge a plus. Must possess initiative, imagination, stamina, a sense of humor and a love of art. Ability to juggle and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously required. The PR Associate must be available for occasional evening and weekend event assignments.

PEM seeks an imaginative, experienced curator to create and lead a distinctive program in contemporary art that builds on the museum’s historically international perspective. Join a curatorial community with rich areas of expertise under the direction of Chief Curator Lynda Roscoe Hartigan.

The Curator of Contemporary Art's primary responsibilities will be to:

  1. Organize exhibitions
  2. Build partnerships with other museums to secure or co-organize traveling exhibitions
  3. Write publications for the Museum and other high-profile venues
  4. Develop patronage and cultivate support from individuals, foundations, and government agencies
  5. Expand the Museum’s audience for modern and contemporary art through collaboration with curatorial, interpretation, education, design, and marketing staff

Qualifications:

MA or PhD and minimum 8 years of experience creating well-received, engaging exhibitions and publications, related especially to international contemporary art after 1975. The intellect to create a broad array of thought-provoking, original shows, and the ability to explore and reveal connections across concepts, cultures, media, styles, and time frames are imperative. Candidate must possess the passion to expand appreciation of new art; a charismatic, articulate public speaking style; and an ability to build support and spark enthusiasm in varied audiences -- from international collectors and colleagues to general visitors, students, and families.

General Maintenance Assistant

We currently have a full-time opening for a General Maintenance Assistant. The weekly schedule will be up to 40 hours per week.

The ideal candidate will be professional, and hard-working. Work done by the Facilities team is important, and ensures that the Peabody Essex Museum will be kept safe and clean for all who visit the museum and its grounds. High School Diploma and previous maintenance / janitorial experience are preferred. Uniforms will be provided by PEM.

Responsibilities include:

  • General cleaning of museum facilities and grounds
  • Operating electronic/automated cleaning equipment
  • Maintaining landscaped outdoor areas/sidewalks/driveways (plus snow removal)
  • Moving of office furnishings and exhibit cases, as needed
  • Performing shipping and receiving tasks
  • Assisting with special functions at the Museum

Security Console Operators

Seeking Security Console Operators who will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Museum’s Security Control Center. Responsibilities include: operating, maintaining, & monitoring computer driven security, access, surveillance, life safety & operational systems. Respond to & coordinates alarm response. Requirements include: High School education; or technical school preferred. A minimum of one yr related experience; technical, computer-based security/fire systems programming/operation a plus. Prior museum or central station experience desired. Must possess superior PC, communication, organization, and customer service skills. FT & PT with benefits. Museum Action Corps Internship Program

The Museum Action Corps is a unique internship program that provides opportunities for a culturally diverse group of students from Massachusetts, ages 16 to 21, to learn about museums firsthand and to gain valuable professional work experience. The Museum Action Corps combines paid, museum-based employment with leadership and creativity development to broaden students' perspectives on work and their role as members of various communities. The MAC program is funded by The Education through Cultural and Historical Organizations (ECHO) Act, which is an enrichment initiative serving children, teachers and adult learners. ECHO programs are produced jointly and individually through a collaboration of six regional organizations: Alaska Native Heritage Center; North Slope Borough ECHO Project; Bishop Museum; New Bedford ECHO Project; Peabody Essex Museum; and the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. Working with schools and community-based organizations, ECHO programs amplify educational benefits, foster appreciation of culture and history, and assist communities in maximizing the social benefits of new technologies.

High School Internships consist of 200 hours of paid work.  Eligibility for this position is limited to individuals ages 16 to 18 who currently live and attend high school in Massachusetts.

College Internships consist of 400 hours of paid work.  Eligibility for this position is limited to individuals ages 17 to 21 who currently either live or attend college or university in Massachusetts.  Residents of Massachusetts attending college or university outside the state are also eligible.  Students also must be interested in pursuing a professional career in the field the internship concentrates on.  These internships are also available for college credit if officially requested by the student.  

Eligibility: Internships are for a period of approximately of three months. Each applicant will work with museum officials to determine the schedule for internship completion. Students must commit to complete the total number of internship hours including hours allocated for the weekly internship meetings (Weds at 3pm) and MAC events. In order to be considered for these internships, students must submit a completed MAC application together with all required materials on or before the posted deadline. Non U.S. citizens must offer proper visas and proof of alien status, which allows them to work in the United States as well as a letter from their school or academic institution giving them the clearance to apply to the program. Minorities and low income students are encouraged to apply. 

 
 In order to be considered for an internship, we must receive the student’s completed application along with the following materials:

  1. A full resume
  2. Two recommendation letters (no family members)
  3. An Official transcript (first semester college students provide high school transcript)

Interviews will be conducted within one month of the application deadline (Please see below).
