Indices

Two indices - 50-year (1941-1990) and 5-year (1991-1995) - serve as a cumulative summary of material in the journal.

Each Index provides an alphabetical listing for the indicated period and is particularly suited for research in maritime history. It includes the names of ships of various categories, together with the names of captains, masters, and some of the crew and passengers of many of the vessels that are referred to in the quarterly issues. Each Index also includes the names of authors and their articles that were published in The American Neptune. In addition to the ship's name, most ship entries provide the category of vessel (bark, schooner, steamer/steamboat, etc.), together with the year in which the vessel was constructed or the year to which the vessel is referred in an article.

Because the entry name of a ship usually is cited in full (where known) in its alphabetical order, the indices also include a separate table listing the last name of most compound names.

The Indices also include title, author and reviewer of books which have been reviewed.
