COVER ILLUSTRATION
Kuniyoshi Utagawa (1791-1861) Kuniyoshi is best known for his striking landscapes and coastal views that utilize Western techniques of perspective. The resulting sense of modernity marked a radical departure form traditional in the Japanese Ukiyo-e print. The image depicts the different species captured in the early nineteenth century Japanese shore-whaling industry. The whales identified are (right to left): Sebi-Kujira (Right), Zato-Kujira (Humpback), Akabo (Whale with reddish skin), Iwashi-Kujira (Sei), Nagasu-Kujira (Blue). Hirado is a hilly island north of the Goto archipelago off the west coast of Kyushu, Japan.
