Inspired By China
An online exhibition of the Peabody Essex Museum

Sea Sketch by Antoine Roux

In seeking inspiration, artists and artisans through the ages have turned to historical precedents, personal experiences, popular culture, or objects from other cultures.
At the Peabody Essex Museum, the cycle of inspiration from distant cultures has continued. First, with a three-day intensive workshop on Chinese furniture for 22 invited master furnituremakers from America, Canada and China, in June 2005, and then, with an exhibition of the work they produced as result of their brush with Chinese furniture.

Now we invite you to join this exploration of furniture, form and culture as you wander these web pages of inspiring and
inspired works.
