Armorials Today

  • Bluth Family Crest // Image courtesy Edman Goodrich.

Contemporary armorials are everywhere. Unlike Michael Lin’s distillation of complex symbols into interchangeable silhouettes, most armorials today are still built from iconic images that communicate ambition, status, and social distinction.

The armorial to the right is a satirical piece inspired by the Fox Broadcasting Company television series Arrested Development. It plays on the escapades of the dysfunctional Bluth family.

Artist Christian Toth / SECTR incorporates many traditional armorial elements into this mural in Toronto.

Armorials in hip hop culture often incorporate “bling” such as sunglasses, diamonds, gold, that are meant to emphasize the status or importance of an artist or group.

  • Baltimore Ravens // NFL Copyrighted Image; Courtesy of the Baltimore Ravens.

This secondary logo of the National Football League’s Baltimore Ravens features designs derived from the Maryland state flag, which, in turn, had been derived from the coat of arms of Lord Baltimore, the state’s founder.

Shown here adorning the gates of Buckingham Palace, the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom is the official armorial of Queen Elizabeth II.

Tattoos are a common manifestation of armorial imagery, often conveying a person’s strong connection to their family history and heritage.
