Peabody Essex Museum Asian Export Art

The Peabody Essex Museum's Asian Export Art Wing is a permanent exhibition space for the extensive Asian Export Art collection which numbers approximately 10,000 objects. From China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Sri Lanka, and the Phillipines, these objects include painting and sculpture, ceramics and enamels, furniture and lacquerware, silverware, jewelry and textiles. For almost 400 years, these items made for the British, Continental and American markets were the chief means of transmitting Asia's material culture to the west.

Founded in 1984 with the merger of the Peabody Museum of Salem and the China Trade Museum, the Department of Asian Export Art currently displays over 1,000 objects in eleven galleries.
