Guidelines for Author ContributionsThe American Neptune welcomes authors' contributions covering all aspects of world maritime history, including art, naval science, hydrography, archaeology, ship preservation, modeling, and museum design and theory. The Neptune is a journal of wide-ranging international interest and appeal. Manuscripts must be submitted in duplicate and addressed to the Managing Editor,The American Neptune, Peabody Essex Museum, East India Square, Salem, MA 01970. While every care will be exercised, the editors cannot assume responsibility for unsolicited manuscripts. Authors should keep the Managing Editor informed of any changes in address. Contributors of accepted articles receive four (4) free copies of The American Neptune in which their work appears; contributors of notes, documents and book reviews receive one free copy.
MANUSCRIPTS AND ILLUSTRATIONSAll manuscripts must be typewritten or printed, double-spaced, on one side only of 8 1/2" x 11" sheets numbered consecutively. The contributor's name, address, telephone, and fax number should accompany the manuscript. Articles should not normally exceed forty-five typed pages. Contributors should submit all manuscripts in final form to eliminate the possibility of delay once articles are set in galley proofs. Authors will receive only one set of proofs. The journal is edited according to the most recent edition of The Chicago Manual of Style, and the editors suggest that authors consult that manual for guidelines on style. American (us) spelling and punctuation are used in The Neptune with the exception of direct quotes, titles, and place names from British or British Commonwealth sources. The spelling of words will be changed accordingly. All references should be verified, and contributors should check manuscripts for accuracy and consistency. A recent copy of The Neptune may serve as a practical guide to style and format. Manuscripts submitted for consideration must be based on original research and analysis, and should not have been published elsewhere in any language. All manuscripts are subject to a peer review process at the discretion of the Editor-in-Chief. Upon acceptance of manuscripts from authors or reviewers, the contributors are asked to provide a copy of the text on a DOS formatted, high density disk (preferably 3 1/2") in addition to the typed or printed manuscript. ILLUSTRATIONS: Contributors are strongly encouraged to submit at least four illustrations with their articles. Glossy prints of photographs are preferable to matte surfaces. Drawings should be done in India ink on white drawing paper or illustration cardboard. Each illustration should be labeled on the reverse side (but. not written directly on the photograph),to show its location within the text.and caption to which it is to correspond,. The location of items to be reproduced should always be given; otherwise, the layout ,operator will. decide upon the most appropriate place..Captions should be listed on a separate page and labeled Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. The source of each photo must be indicated. Note: The Neptune does not label illustrations within the text. In the case of materials from institutions, private collections, or copyrighted sources, contributors must supply, upon acceptance of the article, a written permission to reproduce the item. All illustrative materials will be returned after publication. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTS: Contributors should provide a brief biographical paragraph which includes such information as education, degrees, areas of specialization, location, organizational or academic connections, and previous publications. Contributors may acknowl- edge the help of individuals and institutions that assisted in the preparation of the article, usually shown as a beginning end note.
STYLISTIC GUIDELINESREFERENCE TO VESSELS: A vessel should be referred to as "she" or "her," not "it". NOTES:The Neptune uses endnotes, not footnotes. All endnotes should be double spaced, numbered consecutively, and placed at the end of the article. Their form should be based on guidelines in the latest edition of The Chicago Manual of Style. The abbreviation "p." and "pp." should be omitted from page references unless the number would be ambiguous without it. When volume and page numbers come together, the abbreviations "vol." and "p." are omitted and a colon separates the numbers. For example, vol. 2, p.,38 will read 2:38. Since 1990, Arabic numerals have replaced Roman numerals for volumes and numbers of periodicals in The American Neptune. For example:
The number of endnotes is to be kept to a minimum, commensurate with the expected significant scholarly support and value. COMMAS:When a series of words or phrases is used, a comma is placed before the final word or phrase. He was a fearless, sober, and competent seaman. When two-clauses of a compounded sentence are joined by a conjunction, a comma is placed before the conjunction. Double predicates are not divided by a comma. For example:
QUOTATIONS: Use of a quotation of more than one sentence may:require the author to:obtain approval from the copyright or manuscript holder. Copies of permission letters for. quoted materials must be sent to The Neptune. PROOFREADING: TheAmerican Neptune proofreads its articles in detail. Strong efforts are made to ensure that substantive material is not changed, and authors are provided with final copy for checking shortly before the issue is sent to the printer.
BOOK REVIEWSWhile The American Neptune welcomes offers to review books, reviewing assignments (including length of review and due date) are made by the Book Review Editor. Each review should be preceded by a descriptive heading in the following order: For example:
COPYRIGHT POLICYOnce a manuscript is accepted for publication in The American Neptune, it becomes the property of the Peabody Essex Museum and cannot be reproduced elsewhere without permission from the Museum. Requests for reproduction rights should be addressed to the Director of Publications, Peabody Essex Museum, East India Square, Salem, MA 01970. If requests to reproduce Neptune articles raise questions or involve significant compensation to the Museum, the Director of Publications will consult with the author when feasible. (Authors should keep the Managing Editor of The Neptune informed of any changes of permanent address.)
OFFPRINTSAuthors may order offprints of their article when they return corrected proof sheets. Note: This depends upon the printer used, which may change from year to year. Directions and prices for ordering the off- prints will be sent along with the proof sheets. Off.prints cannot be provided if ordered after the volume number in which the article is to appear has gone to press. If offprints appear unduly expensive, the Publisher will provide authors with ten additional copies of their article without charge.
