Visiting the Library

The Phillips Library is located in Plummer Hall on the campus of the Peabody Essex Museum in downtown Salem, Massachusetts. Plummer Hall is on Essex Street located next to the Salem Visitors Center and Armory Park.

Visitors to the Library must check in with the Security Guard before entering the library. After paying the daily stipend, visitors are required to leave coats, briefcases, backpacks, handbags, and pens in the free lockers provided to library patrons. Laptop computers, notebooks, and pencils may be brought into the Reading Room. Cell phones and pagers must be turned off in the Library. No cameras (or cell phones with cameras) are allowed in the Library; they must be placed in the lockers before entering the Library.

All researchers must register with the Librarian upon entering the Library every time they visit the Library. Each patron must fill out a registration form once a year. Since the Phillips Library is a research facility dedicated to making primary materials available for research, as well as protecting them for future generations, specific rules and procedures are necessary and must be followed by all patrons. At the time of registration a staff member will provide orientation to the layout of the Reading Room and instruct patrons how to use the Library's catalog and finding aids. Specific procedures to request Library materials will also be discussed.

Photocopy requests must be approved by the Librarian. When the physical condition of the item makes it possible, photocopies will be made by the library staff; patrons are not allowed to make any photocopies. A fee of $.50 per printed page or $1.00 per manuscript page will be charged for each copy. There will be at least a 48 hour turnaround time for photocopy requests to be processed. Librarians may be able to fill requests sooner, but patrons may expect a delay of 2 - 3 work days to have photocopying request to be fulfilled. Patrons must provide contact information for the librarians to process the photocopies. A $5.00 handling fee will be charged for up to 30 copies; $7.50 will be added to the cost for copy requests above 30 items. Copies from microfilm can be made by the library patron at the microfilm copier at $.50 per page.

Special arrangements can also be made to have photographs created of certain library materials; the museum's photography department will process this request. Please ask the Librarian for the appropriate pricing information and photograph-request forms.
