Asia Curriculum

Art, culture, and history of China, Japan, and Korea

The Peabody Essex Museum’s education department has produced a set of original resources on Asian art and culture that feature the museum’s collections of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean art. Comprised of sourcebooks, lesson plans, and art cards, these resources were written for K-12 teachers by museum educators with academic and experiential knowledge of Asia. The materials will help support the work of classroom teachers by providing succinct, relevant background knowledge of the art, culture, and history of China, Japan, and Korea; offering integrated curriculum units that coordinate with Massachusetts learning standards; and connecting museum visit lessons with pre- and post-visit classroom experiences.

These resources are available here on our Web site free of charge. A hard copy of these resources, consisting of all sourcebooks, lesson plans, and art cards in a three-ring binder can be purchased from the museum for $25.

We recommend that teachers read the corresponding sourcebook section before using our lesson plans. Our curricula have been designed to be flexible, offering an array of components including Primary Source Material, Literature, and Media, which support and augment gallery and object-based learning. With the hope of making it financially and logistically easier to integrate culturally authentic literature and film into the classroom, PEM is pleased to offer a lending library consisting of classroom sets of books and media featured in our lesson plans. These curriculum materials are best used in conjunction with a class museum visit. When you schedule a museum visit, be sure to request a Museum Visit Preparation Form so our gallery instructors can prepare with your particular class in mind.

For more information on these resources, how to access the lending library, schedule a school visit, or to purchase a hard copy, please contact school_services@pem.org or call 978-745-9500 ext. 3060.

We hope you will find these resources useful in illuminating the art and culture of China, Japan, and Korea. Enjoy!

This project was funded by a generous grant from the Freeman Foundation.
