Art & Nature Center

Artists see the world differently from the rest of us. In the interactive Art & Nature Center, you can learn to see things in new ways, too. Trash becomes art. Plants, feathers and shells inspire intricate designs.

Changing exhibitions — complemented by hands-on displays and activities — highlight the global influences nature has had on culture and art. Visitors of all ages can use our two studios to make art during the weekends, participate in workshops and explore your own creativity.

Eye Spy, Playing with Perception
June 19, 2010 to May 1, 2011

Eye Spy features engaging works that explore the act of perception. Through manipulation of light, form, color and line, leading contemporary artists show viewers how perception is based as much on what we think we should see as on what we actually see. Abstract sculptures create surprisingly recognizable shadows, for example; holographic images fool us into thinking we're seeing 3-D. On view in PEM's interactive Art & Nature Center, Eye Spy encourages visitors to examine how perception and illusion influence the way we interpret the world.
