Eye Spy: Fake or Real?
We are bombarded with images every day — in print, on TV, and online. Our first reaction might be to assume that a photograph represents reality, but photo manipulation is as old as photography itself. Digital cameras and computers have made altering photos even easier to do and harder to detect. Such changes result in false “realities” that range from surprising and eye-catching to truly deceptive and misleading.
Analyzing Images — Getting Started:
- Trust your instincts. If your first impression is “That’s impossible!” or “Something’s not right…,” then take a closer look.
- Look at details. Divide the photo into four parts and look carefully at each section. Does anything stand out as unusual or unlikely?
- Look for clues. Pay close attention to anything inconsistent or odd in lighting, coloration, shadows, and angles.
- Think critically. If the image looks too good to be true, it probably is!
