Introduction
Between 1901 and 1930, Edward S. Curtis photographed Native
Americans from more than eighty tribes. His seminal imagesmore
than 40,000came to define Americas popular vision
of Native American culture. Portraits of Native America
features more than sixty-five master prints selected for exhibit
by Curtis himself in 1906. The magnificent 14-by-17-inch platinum
prints, on art nouveau mounts and signed by the artist, testify
to Curtiss importance as a major American photographer.
The works are drawn from the Peabody Essex collection, considered
the finest museum compilation of Curtis photographs in the
world.
