TourFest

Do you talk to art? Does it ever talk back? What kind of museum tour asks you to consider questions like these? A PEM docent-led tour, of course.

Spend a wonderful winter weekend at TourFest, an annual event that offers a great way to view the museum's collection with fresh eyes. Far from a "we talk, you listen" exercise, PEM tours are as entertaining as they are educational. You will be introduced to fabulous objects you've never noticed before or learn surprising new things about familiar favorites. You will discover the emotion, adventure and challenges of the maritime experience. Or why some artists "supersize" their work, while others work in miniature.

TourFest offers a smorgasbord of nine tours over two days. The 45-minute gallery explorations, developed and led by the museum's docent council, are meant to appeal to a wide range of interests. You're sure to find one (or more!) that piques your curiosity.

A Taste of the Tours

The Humongous Teeny-Tiny Tour | 11:30 am - 12:15 pm

Does one size fit all? See if and why an object's size matters as we look at some of the museum's smallest and largest works of art.

Keeping Up Appearances | noon - 12:45 pm

Dress for power, dress for allure, dress for fun. Fashion crosses time and cultures at PEM.

Look ... and Look Again | 12:30 - 1:15 pm

Uncover the story within the story in this exploration of several intriguing works of art.

Sailing by the Stars | 1 - 1:45 pm

Follow the stars and move with the wind. Learn about square-riggers, celestial navigation, dead reckoning and how art played a part in the great age of sail.

Yakkety Yak, Please Talk Back | 1:30 - 2:15 pm

Some art seems to talk — to someone in the painting, to the world at large or perhaps to you. Have fun speculating on what some works of art might be saying.

Art & Politics | 2 - 2:45 pm

Some objects carry a political message. Come see what our art has to say about power, rebellion and political agendas.

Love Stories | 2:30 - 3:15 pm

"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways." Passion, unrequited love, happily ever after — the museum's art tells many love stories.

Triumph and Tragedy on the High Seas | 3 - 3:45 pm

The sea is the setting for adventure, drama, tragedies and triumphs in this exciting tour of maritime art.

TourFest is dedicated to the memory of Valerie Hoffman, a devoted PEM docent for 21 years and the coordinator of TourFest 2010.
