Functions Intern (still accepting applications for Summer 2012!)

Join the Functions dept. as a Functions Intern. PEM is more than just a museum. There are banquet halls, historic homes, gardens and state-of-the-art meeting spaces available for weddings, luncheons, corporate meetings or holiday parties. The functions intern will have a unique experience to work with both the museum’s Manager of Private Functions as well as Hawthorne Catering Sales Manager to learn all aspects of the event business. In addition to administrative work and industry research, you’ll meet with clients, pre-plan events from both the caterer's and museum’s perspective and work the events themselves.

Internship Qualifications: The ideal intern is an outgoing, organized person interested in the hospitality industry. You will work with clients, vendors, chefs and other departments within both the Peabody Essex Museum and the Hawthorne Hotel. The ability to work well with staff throughout the organization is essential. The internship is between 20-40 hours per week, with days and hours divided as needed between the two departments. Many Saturday nights are required. This is an unpaid internship.

Design Intern/Creative Services Department
(still accepting applications for Summer 2012!)

Join the Creative Services team as a design intern. If you are nearing completion of a graphics art degree and would like to gain significant workplace experience before graduation this is the ideal internship for you. You'll produce a wide range of printed materials including signs, brochures, fliers and postcards and help solve design and construction problems related to museum signage, packaging, etc. Interns will learn to take a job from conception through printing (including press checks).

Internship Qualifications: College student and skilled designer, proficient in InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, who can work independently and with a team. You must also have good writing skills and be interested in working in an arts/nonprofit environment. The ability to work well with staff throughout the organization is essential.

Writer/Editor Intern/Creative Services

Join the Creative Services team as a writer/editor intern. You'll work with the Director of Editorial and Design and the Creative Services staff to write articles or rewrite copy for brochures, invitations, exhibition materials, ads, promotions, the members’ magazine, Web and more. This is a great opportunity to build your portfolio and learn how to create buzz for upcoming exhibitions and events.

Internship Qualifications: College student with knowledge of and an appreciation for art, excellent writing, reporting and copyediting skills, and familiarity with AP style. The ability to work well with staff throughout the organization is essential.

Audio-Visual Intern/Integrated Media Department

Join the Integrated Media team as an audio-visual intern. You'll support the AV staff before, during and after events, special programs and more. You’ll learn which equipment is best for the job and how to ensure events run smoothly, technically speaking.

Internship Qualifications: College student familiar with all types of audio and visual equipment. You should have experience with live audio mixing and video recording. A pleasant demeanor and solid communication skills are essential.

Video Post-Production Intern/Integrated Media Department

Join the Integrated Media team as a video post-production intern. The post-production internship is a hands-on learning experience. You'll collaborate in the creative and technical processes involved in the creation of video pieces that document artists at work as well as events at the museum. Work with Final Cut Pro to edit short-format videos that appear on pem.org, during programming, for marketing initiatives and in exhibitions.

Internship Qualifications: College student with a solid understanding of Final Cut Pro and strong organizational and communication skills.

Human Resources Intern/Human Resources Department

Join the Human Resources Department and learn practical, professional office experience in a fast paced environment. The Human Resources (HR) Department provides internal support in areas such as Benefits, Recruiting, Performance, Training and Compliance as well as Employee Relations. The intern will assist the HR manager with projects and clerical duties and also works closely with the HR assistant and accounting staff. Assist with online job postings, processing resumes, working with volunteer and intern data, planning staff events including training and wellness, data entry and audits.

Internship Qualifications: Course work in Human Resources and/or interest in pursuing career in Human Resources. Detail-oriented individual with strong Microsoft Office skills, knowledge of basic office procedures (filing, photocopying, faxing, data entry, word processing) and Internet research capabilities. You must have strong organizational skills and demonstrate the ability to work with confidential material. 15 + hours per week.

Marketing Intern/Marketing Department

Join the Marketing team as an intern. As a ready contributor to our marketing team, you’ll assist the department researching and writing our monthly tourism newsletter, radio spots and e-blasts to PEM subscribers. You'll also support the department with a variety of tasks including sales, data entry, distributing materials to museum partners and processing donation requests.

Internship Qualifications: College student with exemplary communication skills, strong organizational and people skills, attention to detail, a comfortable phone presence and the ability to work independently. You’ll need Internet skills for research, strong office skills and the ability to multi-task.

Guest Services Intern/Guest Services Department

Join the Guest Services team as an intern. You'll be an ambassador for the museum, working in the Information and Special Exhibition areas to welcome visitors and inform them about our programs and exhibitions. You may also learn how to sell museum admission at the admissions desk and assist current and new members at the membership desk. Other responsibilities within the department include administrative support and general customer service for museum visitors, members and staff. You’ll learn customer service skills by interacting with the public, helping ensure a pleasant visit and sharing information.

Internship Qualifications: High school or college student. Some customer service experience is preferred but not required. You should have a friendly, personable manner and be comfortable interacting with the public. Flexible schedule weekdays and weekends. Cash-handling experience a plus.

Art & Nature Center Intern

Join the Art & Nature Center (ANC) as an intern. You'll greet and help visitors in the ANC and monitor how families interact with exhibits. You'll help teach interactive programs and family workshops and develop art activities. You'll use the Internet and the library to research topics, generate programming ideas and help plan ANC exhibitions. Administrative tasks include copying, preparing mailings and organizing supplies.

Internship Qualifications: College or graduate student. Some customer service or education experience is preferred but not required. You should have a friendly, personable manner, strong people skills and a passion for working with children and families and be comfortable interacting with the public. Ideal for students interested in museum education.

Registration Intern/Collection Services Department

Join the Registration team as an intern. You will discover the secret, fast-paced, behind-the-scenes workings of an art museum by assisting in the daily duties of the Registration Department. You will assist in the preparation of documentation for changing exhibitions, outgoing loans and PEM’s permanent collection; digitize collection records, including scanning, image manipulation, file re-naming and organization; data entry of object and accession records on the Argus Software database system; archive files, including surveying, organizing and archiving files under the instruction of the entire Registration Department; research projects pertaining to donors, loans and object records as they arise; train in object handling, object moves and the creation of condition reports; and participate in ongoing collection digitization projects. (We are currently working with the Native American collection and creating an inventory of all exhibition galleries. In Summer we will start working on preparations for PEM’s building expansion project)

Internship Qualifications: College student with knowledge of and an appreciation for art/art history and a demonstrated ability in paying attention to details. Ability to work well with staff throughout PEM is essential.

Arts Adventure Club Intern/Education Department

Join the Education Department for summer 2012. Interns will prepare activities, lessons, and museum tours for the Arts Adventures Club summer camp under the guidance of a Massachusetts state-licensed art educator. Interns will also provide day-to-day instruction and support for students participating in the Arts Adventures Club 2012.

Internship Qualifications: Interns must have previous camp instructor experience as well as the ability to develop and lead creative art lessons. Interns must be available the weeks of July 9-13, July 16-20, August 6-10, and August 13-17 from 9am-3pm daily. Dependability and flexibility are musts. College students and student teachers are encouraged to apply.

School Programs Intern/Education Department

Join the Education team as a school programs intern. You will help assess current programs for school groups and help plan new tours and art activities that connect to curriculum frameworks. This is a great opportunity to learn more about PEM’s collections and about museum-based teaching strategies. You also will work closely with Education staff to develop and implement a multi-day teacher professional development workshop that will take place in late July/early August.

Internship Qualifications: College or graduate student who is knowledgeable about art and art making and enjoys working with teachers Academic concentration in Education, Studio Art, Art History or Museum Studies preferred. You will need strong organizational skills, computer skills and the ability to work collaboratively or independently and multitask. You should be comfortable speaking in front of groups and have excellent communication skills.

Development Intern/Development Department

Join the Development team as an intern. You’ll assist the Annual Giving and Institutional Giving teams in all aspects of the Peabody Essex Museum’s fundraising operations. Responsibilities include: Provide administrative support to Development department as needed; assist with specific research and data gathering projects; support gift acknowledgement and fulfillment activities; contribute to maintenance of accurate Raiser’s Edge donor database by gathering and updating of contact information and relationships; assist in planning and execution of special member events.

Internship Qualifications: College student with excellent written and oral communication, planning and organizational skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team. Strong interpersonal skills and precise attention to detail are required. Must be computer literate and have knowledge of and ease with Microsoft Office. Must effectively interact with members of the Development staff, as well as other museum departments. Experience conducting online research preferred.

Exhibition Design Intern/Exhibition Planning Department

Join the Exhibition Planning Department as an Exhibition Design Intern. The ideal candidate is a flexible and skilled designer, proficient in InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Microsoft Word and Excel who can work independently and carry through to completion a range of projects. This is more than just a 'design' internship. This is a unique opportunity to design, oversee fabrication and install your work in our exhibitions. The intern should have a basic knowledge of power tools and general carpentry shop safety.

Internship Qualifications: 3rd or 4th year college student who is nearing completion of a graphics art degree, studio arts or museum studies and is interested in seeing what is capable beyond the computer keyboard. Must have good writing skills and be interested in working in an arts/nonprofit environment.

Exhibition Construction Intern/Exhibition Planning Department

Join the Exhibition Planning Department as an Exhibit Construction Intern. The ideal candidate is a college student studying carpentry, stage design or museum studies. Must have a working knowledge of power tools, carpentry and general shop safety. The intern will work in our shop assisting with the fabrication of casework, graphic structures, plinths and other needs for our active exhibition program. If you are interested in learning from professionals while being given a chance to grow, this is a wonderful opportunity.

Internship Qualifications: 3rd or 4th year college student. Must have good communication skills and be able to work with basic MS Word programs and be willing to learn other programs as needed. A love of the arts is mandatory!
